Yes yes yes!!!! A much better prize distribution, much better then the top heavy prize they had last year just so they could advertise a quarter of a million to first place.  I will be in it for sure!

Ugh, but I just looked at how they are handling having two starting days, and I think I will have to talk to them about it, because that is just wrong.  They can't play exactly to the money bubble, because what if day 1 lasts an hour longer than day 2.  Theoretically the player who got 31st on day 1 actually outlasted everyone on day 2 because they still have an hour to make up.

And also what happens if Day 1 gets 250 people but Day 2 gets 300 people...totally not fair to people on Day 2 with that example.

They need to play down to about 50 people on Day 1 and then mark that time on the tourney clock and play the exact same amount of time on Day 2, YOU CANT REACH THE MONEY BUBBLE IN A TOURNEY WHEN EVERYONE ISN"T IN THE SAME BUILDING YET....I will be having a word with Kent on this (probably this weekend).

I spoke with Kent a week ago, and he said only Dave could change it, he had no say in it, and he said he agreed with me, for whatever that is worth, probably said that so I would go back to my seat and continue playing and stop bothering him...

There certainly is a much better payout structure than last year.  I agree with your point about ending day 1s at the same time.  Anyway, I haven't decided whether I will play in some satellites or just buy-in this year.

Man, I just did one of the $110 satellites for this.  I got lucky a couple times and managed to get down to heads up.  She had me covered about 2-1 when it started.  Honestly, I've probably played over 1000 heads up matches (most online) and I think she might be the worst player I've played against.  With huge blinds (700/1500) she seemed to be waiting for a monster before committing any chips.  I managed to get up to about a 2-1 advantage and eventually she got a couple monsters to double up then put me out.  Very frustrating but judging from the general caliber of player I might try another next weekend.

She was such a bad player in general...earlier I had gone all-in UTG for 950.  She was on the BB(600) and folded to my raise after everyone else folded.  How can you fold any hand in that spot getting 6-1?  It's not like my all-in means I've got anything since I'm committed to play one of the next 2 hands...ah, whatever, I'm going to sleep...

i'm pretty sure they are. i played in 2006 and my entry had someone else's name. they did not care.

Does anyone know if there are still seats available?  Last year they sold out pretty early.  Also, are there still satellites going on?  I definitely want to play again this year.  I thought the blind structure was really good last year (far better than the WSOP and caesar's megastack debacles I recently experienced).  Now that the payout is flatter, it seems like a great value.

Well, I'm in.  I hope they stop the clock at the same point for the first two days.  I guess it doesn't matter since I'll probably win it either way.

Well, I'm in.  I hope they stop the clock at the same point for the first two days.  I guess it doesn't matter since I'll probably win it either way.

That was my major quibble with the way it is laid out.  If they play down to exactly 30 each day, there is no way they will be on the same level.  You can't bust a bubble in a multi starting day tournament when the whole tourney isn't playing at the same time, that is just theoretically horrible.  I spoke with both people who would have control over this, and they said, too bad.

The best solution is: You can play down to 50ish on Day 1a, and barring some unforseen catastrophe where all of Day 1b wants to go all in every hand, you will play the same amount of time on Day 1b, and rejoin the fields on Day 2 and burst the bubble then.
Title: Re: 08 Casino Arizona State Poker Championship and Qualifiers and Shootouts
Post by: that_pope on July 02, 2008, 01:48:37 PM
I mean, how fair is it that the bubble bursts instantly in one day, and then I, on a semi-short stack, get blinded to the ground while trying to squeek into the money, and we end up playing for 50 extra minutes.  Now they all saved all those blinds that I unfairly had to play, and vice versa, if I was a big stack in Day 1a, and all of a sudden my stack is smaller because Day 1b big stacks got more time to abuse the bubble, and at a higher blind level.

Nothing good can come from ending it this way, makes it almost like a shoot-out.  The only way they could make ending at 30 people each day fair is if all 60 people come back the next day and start with equal stakes, making day 1 basically a shoot-out/satellite.

As you can see, I have very strong feelings on this, that no one else (specifically Dave and Kent) seem to care about.

I completely agree with you.  By playing down to the same number of players each day, you avoid the problem of bursting the bubble that day but give a major advantage to one of the days.  I definitely think that playing down to some set number on day 1A and then having day 1B play to whatever that point is on the clock makes sense.  I'll also complain to Dave and some of the other tournament players.  Hopefully if enough people bring it up they'll change it.  If not, hopefully enough people complain the actual day of the tournament that they will when people realize the problem.

Has anyone played the $125 satellites?  If so what was it like?  I'm most likely playing the last one on Sunday.

Well I played the satellite yesterday.  153 people entered, 15 got tickets, 16-18 got their money back.  I was able to squeeze in to the top 15!  Pretty excited.  I thought I played quite well and then when blinds were getting big with 40 people left, I was forced to go all in when I was BB.  I got ridiculously lucky and tripled up.  Went on a rush of cards and got enough chips to basically sit around waiting for all short-stacks to bust.  Overall the play was pretty bad - definitely some good players but wow there were some terrible plays.  For ex:

Guy is on the button with about 6,300 in chips.  Blinds are at 500-1000 and he raises to 4000.  BB pushes, Button folds.  There are about 30 people left I think.

Blinds go up to 700-1500 and the same guy is in the BB. Someone raises to 4500 and the BB FOLDS!!!  He leaves himself 800 in chips.  I was surprised he called the extra 100 from the SB

Really looking forward to August 16th!

They are not staggering the seat assignments at sign up.

They are filling up tables as they go.

So does that mean my starting table will consist mostly of those people I satellited in with?  I'd be pretty happy if that's the case!

That is another horrible decision they are making.  They run their tourneys very unprofessionally.  I could do a much better job with my education, poker knowledge, and love for the game.  I have had passing thoughts about turning it into a career, but unless I become like Matt Savage, it can't pay much better than what I am already making at an entry level position.

I accidently planned a Vegas trip the same weekend as this tourney, so I guess now I have a good excuse for blowing this tourney off.

I mean, come on.  So you and 2 of your buddies decide to enter this tourney together, and enter early on and get one of the first tables that won't break until the final day, lots of good collusion possibilities there.  They better redraw seating for the final day, or now they are just looking downright stupid.  Learn how to run a professional tourney.

Now that you mention it, that really is a stupid idea and should be pointed out to the TD (especially the collusion aspect).  It's only good for me personally in one sense...I will have played with many of the people at my starting table for hours so I have a good idea of what I'm up against.

Well, I made it through day 1.  We played down to 45; tomorrow they will play to the same point on the clock which is about halfway through level 12, 2000/4000/100.  I'm below average in chips with about 47K but at least I have enough to give me a fighting chance.  GL to whoever's playing tomorrow.  I'll be there for day 2 at 11am Monday.  They actually sold extra seats so that we started with 320 players or something today and probably the same tomorrow.  Now they are saying 70 places will be paid.

Oh, and they gave $500 to the first person eliminated and something like $250 to the 2nd person.  WTH is that all about?  If anything, they could give something to the bubble or next to bubble.  There are going to be 20 or so players who made it through day 1 and still lose a buy-in while the guy who lasted 10 mins only loses half a buyin...something seems screwy here.

I really hope I am able to cash tomorrow.  I am going through a heck of a drought in tourneys and cashing in this would surely help.  I haven't cashed in about my last 20 tournaments going back to the WSOP event in June.  I've bubbled and 2nd to bubbled 2 of the last 3.  I went through a streak last year where I got within 5 spots of the bubble in 4 out of 5 tournaments and am posting because hopefully by naming my fear, I can defeat it.  I think I am going to tighten up my play compared to how it usually is near the bubble since a 2K difference is more significant to me than a usual bubble.  Getting over the psychological hump I'm experiencing at the moment would be very beneficial for me.  Obv the 200k+ first place would be beneficial also but I'm willing to give up some equity in that to give myself a better chance of at least making the money.

I wonder who it was...Its amazing what people think they should be able to get away with.
Not sure how many players were left, i heard a starting figure of 92 or 94 players for Monday, they stopped at the same level as when they stopped on Saturday.

I am really happy to see they changed the way the tournament played.  Don't know how it happened, but I would like to think some of my posts and complaining at the casino had something to do with it.  That is the proper way to run the tournament.  Good luck everyone who is in it tonight!

I'm out.  I got AA and QQ early, raised and got no callers.  This just kept me even with the blinds for a couple orbits but then as we approached the bubble I didn't get any hand better than K8 and got blinded out for a while.  I ended up finishing 64th, good for $2254.  Funny to think that's better than 11th place got last year.

Thanks man, it was a huge confidence boost for me and the money wasn't bad either.  I didn't really look around at the other tables too much but I did notice quite a few tourney regs still in it.  Other than that, it seemed people I didn't recognize.  However, I wouldn't recognize some of the high limit players since I don't usually play with them.

Was looking to see results of this tourney and found this cool website! It taken me 3 days to get over being knocked out.  Finished in the 40's for $3053.  Took a few tough beats had around 300k with around 60 people left.  I've been around long enough to keep the bad beat stories to myself though!

Welcome to the forum.  That's pretty rough but congrats on the cash anyway.
